Detailed Itinerary: Fes Walking Tour

Royal Palace Visit

Begin your journey in Fes, the cultural and spiritual heart of Morocco, with a guided tour that unveils both its famous landmarks and hidden treasures. The day starts at the Royal Palace (Dar el-Makhzen), an architectural masterpiece renowned for its majestic golden gates framed by exquisite zellij (mosaic tilework) and carved cedar wood. While the palace interior remains off-limits, its exterior offers a glimpse into the grandeur of Moroccan craftsmanship and is a perfect spot for photos.

Mellah Visit

Nearby, walk through the historic Mellah (Jewish Quarter), a neighborhood that dates back to the 15th century and reflects a unique blend of Jewish and Moroccan architecture. Stroll along narrow streets lined with ornate balconies and visit the Ibn Danan Synagogue, a beautifully restored sanctuary that sheds light on the once-thriving Jewish community of Fes.

Visit Fes el-Bali

Entering the ancient Fes el-Bali (Old Medina) through the iconic Bab Bou Jeloud (Blue Gate), you’ll step into a labyrinth of narrow streets that exude history and culture. The gate itself, adorned with vibrant blue and green tiles, symbolizes peace and fertility and serves as the perfect introduction to the vibrant medina. Inside, marvel at the Al-Qarawiyyin University, established in 859 AD and recognized as the world’s oldest continually operating educational institution. Although the interior is reserved for worshippers, its exterior, with ornate archways and courtyards, is a testament to the city’s intellectual legacy.

Visit Chouara Tannery

A short walk brings you to the Chouara Tannery, one of the oldest leather-making facilities in the world. From the terraces overlooking the tannery, you can witness workers dyeing hides in large stone vats filled with vibrant natural colors. Your guide will explain the traditional tanning process, which has remained unchanged for centuries, offering a fascinating insight into this historic craft.

Medersa Bou Inania Visit

Next, visit the Medersa Bou Inania, a stunning 14th-century Islamic school and one of the few religious buildings in Morocco open to non-Muslims. The Medersa is celebrated for its intricate stucco, cedar wood carvings, and colorful zellij tilework. It’s a serene spot to appreciate the artistry of Marinid architecture while learning about its role in Islamic education.

Nejjarine Fountain Visit

As you wander deeper into the medina, explore the bustling souks, where every alleyway is filled with vibrant colors, enticing aromas, and the sounds of craftsmen at work. From handwoven textiles and ceramics to brassware and carpets, the markets offer an authentic experience of Moroccan artisan traditions. Hidden gems like the Nejjarine Fountain, a stunning example of Moroccan tile and woodwork, and Seffarine Square, where metalworkers create intricate designs, add to the charm of the medina.

Explore Borj Nord, Borj Sud, & Jnan Sbil Gardens

In the afternoon, venture outside the medina to visit the Borj Nord or Borj Sud, ancient forts that provide panoramic views of the city. These vantage points offer breathtaking perspectives of the sprawling medina below, with its sea of rooftops and minarets. Afterward, enjoy a tranquil escape at Jnan Sbil Gardens, a beautifully landscaped oasis featuring fountains, palm trees, and exotic plants. It’s the perfect place to relax and soak in the beauty of nature amidst the bustling city.
